The Penn State Extension Greening the Lower Susquehanna Project and the Agriculture and Environment Center is hosting a Woods in Your Backyard Workshop in Shank Park, Bullfrong Valley Road, in Derry Township, Hershey, Dauphin County from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
This workshop will explore why natural infrastructure is important to water quality and stormwater management, and how it will help improve not only the aesthetics of the local neighborhoods, but also improve surrounding wildlife habitat.
Greening the Lower Susquehanna is an innovative public/private partnership to restore riparian buffers and green infrastructure in Pennsylvania’s nutrient “hot spot” of Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon Counties.
As part of this project, several local communities have been working with a team of Penn State experts in extension, forestry, wildlife and landscape architecture to undertake “green visioning” sessions.
These sessions have explored how green infrastructure approaches in these communities can address stormwater challenges. One of these communities is Oakmont 1 in Derry Township, chosen because of their existing efforts to improve stormwater management in partnership with LandStudies, Inc., a local ecological restoration firm.
The workshop is made possible with a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
